An Unexpected Visit
They'd been at it over a month now with still no sign of Dad. There had been hope once when an old acquaintance of John and Dean's called for help on another case and informed them that he found Sam's phone number by calling John's. Suddenly the phone that had given them nothing but disconnect redirects was now clicking over to voicemail in their father's voice informing people to call Sam if they needed help.
Sam had... not liked that development. Dean could understand why. Sam didn't have anything against helping people, but to have proof that their father was still out there and knew Sam was hunting... presumably knew Sam was looking for him... but, he was still staying out of communication? Dean could understand why that was upsetting. All he could do was keep trying to track the man down and hope when they did, Sam could get his answers.
They were in the middle of nowhere Illinois, Dean still recovering from his first and last airplane flight, when their hunt met with an unexpected snag. Dean walked into their motel room after sitting with Sam through his dinner to find their room occupied. A blond vampire was stretched out on Dean's bed, lounging. Inwardly, Dean started cussing colorfully while he pushed Sam as casually behind him as he could.
"Hello, Eric."

Tonight had just been weird and he was worried for Dean. Didn't know he'd been getting him into trouble and worried all over again how they'd make this work between them. It'd be hard to hunt for Dad if Dean had to please every damn vampire they came across. Maybe he shouldn't have asked him along, but... it had been Dean, walking and talking, a comfort, really. He didn't know if he could give it up yet, even if he was frustrated over Dad.
"I will, Dean..." He huddled back under the covers.
He wasn't sure he could fall asleep, but he was trying to.

He made sure to come in silently, just in case Sam fell asleep while he was out.

The clothes he pulled out of the bag and hung up carefully. Black fitted slacks and a gunmetal gray, long sleeved shirt. New boots. He'd left all the shiny, preppy crap Pam forced on him back in Louisiana, so he'd have to make do on his own now.

He looked up as Dean took out his new clothes. "What's with the get up?"
no subject
"If I turn up to present myself to the local sheriff in jeans and biker boots, it'll get back to Eric and I can expect another visit. Or he'll send someone, which would be worse." He sighed and scowled at the 'respectable' clothes. He didn't look bad in them, not at all. He just hated having to wear them.
no subject
"So is that what you meant about them playing dress up with you?" He put aside he pills and finished off his juice.
no subject
"Pretty much. I had a closet full of this crap back at that house. They liked to show me off like a pet."
no subject
"Hey, how often can you... you know, drink from a human? With the supplements and stuff."
no subject
Sam's question made him pause. "As much as I usually take? Three or four times a week, maybe? If you were less physically active maybe more, but I don't wanna risk you getting worn out at a dangerous moment."
no subject
"Hm..." He nodded absently. "I was just curious..."

Dean finished getting ready for bed relatively quickly. He was kind of curious about why Sam wanted to know about the feeding frequency, but he figured now wasn't the best time to push the issue. Especially when he didn't really have time.
He wandered over to ruffle Sam's hair lightly. "Eat something. Real food, dude. Nothing from a gas station or a vending machine, okay?"

Had no idea what they were going to be doing or how hard it was going to be either, so definitely needed some actual food for the energy.

"See you tomorrow night, Sammy." He waved and slipped into his hiding spot, pulling the blackout fabric in around him. In minutes, the inky blackness slipped in as the dawn rose outside.

So while Dean slept, Sam managed another couple hours of sleep before he got up, showered and dressed, then headed out the door to handle some things.

He climbed out from under his bed and stretched.

He paused and looked Sam over. "You okay?"

Going around a bunch of vampires didn't sound appealing, but neither did Dean getting himself in a bad spot by himself.
He looked up at the question, nodding. "Why wouldn't I be?"
no subject
He shook his head and headed for the bathroom. "I'll be alright. They want a favor from Eric, so they won't do anything to me."
no subject
He nodded absently at that. If Dean wanted to handle it by himself, Sam wasn't going to argue with it... so long as he didn't try to take care of the drainers by himself.
no subject
"Probably shouldn't be more than an hour or so. I'll be back after to pick you up." He glanced over at Sam while he sat down to pull on the new boots. "You sure you want to do this? It's humans we're gonna be after. I won't be upset if you decide you'd rather not."
no subject
But it was hard to linger with the amusement at the question. Not like he was easy about that, going after humans, but... "I'm not letting you do it alone, Dean."
The idea of them getting the upper hand with Dean, draining him... it was enough to get him onboard. Besides, the fact that they were draining vampires for blood? Too skeevy to just ignore.
no subject
He nodded at Sam's answer. As long as Sam was sure about it. Didn't want his brother resenting him for it later.
"Alright. I'll be back soon." He snatched up his keys and his wallet and headed for the Impala. The sooner he went and did the stupid meet and greet, the sooner he could hunt.
no subject
If they were going on a hunt, he wanted to know what they were up against. Took some digging around- not everyone had taken a shine to vampires so of course he'd have to dig through a lot of sites that tried to paint the in the worst light possible... and then on the other end of the spectrum, people who apparently adored them. He couldn't tell which was worse... they were both pretty bad.
As soon as he looked up all that he could (and learned some things he probably didn't need to know), he was off his laptop again and going around the room, getting ready. Dean said he'd be back in about an hour and it had been that, so... he had to be ready for this.
