An Unexpected Visit
They'd been at it over a month now with still no sign of Dad. There had been hope once when an old acquaintance of John and Dean's called for help on another case and informed them that he found Sam's phone number by calling John's. Suddenly the phone that had given them nothing but disconnect redirects was now clicking over to voicemail in their father's voice informing people to call Sam if they needed help.
Sam had... not liked that development. Dean could understand why. Sam didn't have anything against helping people, but to have proof that their father was still out there and knew Sam was hunting... presumably knew Sam was looking for him... but, he was still staying out of communication? Dean could understand why that was upsetting. All he could do was keep trying to track the man down and hope when they did, Sam could get his answers.
They were in the middle of nowhere Illinois, Dean still recovering from his first and last airplane flight, when their hunt met with an unexpected snag. Dean walked into their motel room after sitting with Sam through his dinner to find their room occupied. A blond vampire was stretched out on Dean's bed, lounging. Inwardly, Dean started cussing colorfully while he pushed Sam as casually behind him as he could.
"Hello, Eric."

"Hello, Eric."

Better than anywhere else it could stray too.

"You should take a break, dude. You were at the library all day and been on the go since I got up. Take a breather."

He finished off what was left of his dinner, only a couple bites, before he got to his feet and made a grab for his jacket.

He got up and grabbed the keys, heading out to start the car.

It had paid off in the end though. "What was it like there anyway? After you got settled in. Felt like I kind of interrupted whatever life you had going there, man."
no subject
"I dunno that I really had a 'life' there, exactly. It was more like a," he shrugged and considered how to phrase it. "A holding pattern, really. It was... what I was doing to kill the time until I could get a life. Or end it, I guess. Half the time I was trying to figure out how to off myself. Rid the world of another monster."
"It wasn't all bad, though, really. In between all the crazy, there were moments I was almost, kind of happy. Eric could be almost friendly when he wanted to be and I was doing what I was told. Some of the other vampires weren't too bad."
no subject
It might have been selfish of him too, because he didn't want to think of what shape he'd be in right now if he hadn't found Dean, if he hadn't had anything at all.
He smiled a little. "When this is all over, do you think you'll want to go back there?"
no subject
He shrugged at the question as he turned into the parking lot of a promising looking bar. "Maybe? I mean, there's not a lot of places I fit in anymore and Eric's a cold bastard, but I've met some of the other higher-up vampires in other places and they are so much worse."
no subject
He couldn't argue with him on that. Eric had freaked him out but at least he hadn't mauled him to rip his throat out... at least, not yet. Sam wasn't sure how much to trust any of the vampires he'd met besides Dean. "You're going to have to keep in touch if you do, you know."
no subject
Dean wasn't sure what being him actually meant anymore. It used to be taking care of Sam, but lately his presence was making Sam's life more difficult than it otherwise would have been. It used to mean being a hunter, but he was useless for half of every 24 hours, now. What else was there?
If Sam had asked, Dean would have advised him not to trust any vampires. Full stop. Deep down, he wanted Sam to trust him and it made things easier, but he remained aware that he was still a monster. Even he didn't know how much truth there was to the promise that he'd outgrow his conscience and human emotions.
He climbed out of the car and waited for Sam before heading inside the bar. "What are you thinking you'll do when this is over?"
no subject
Honestly? He hadn't put much thought into it yet. All he could think about was Jessica and getting some kind of revenge since he hadn't been there to keep her safe, protect her. Hadn't just been honest to begin with.
He shrugged the thoughts off. "I was studying pre-law... I can't remember if I ever told you." He gave a weak smile. "Before Jess--I had this interview with a law school. A total free ride there, if it all went well, man."
no subject
One of the many reasons he was proud of his brother.
no subject
Though Jess had seemed dead certain he wouldn't. He shook his head, smiling a little as he settled in. When a waitress came around, he got a beer and waited for Dean to give his.
no subject
The bar didn't have TruBlood in stock, but they carried one of the less popular brands. He ordered one of the LifeFlow bottles and smiled at the suspicious look the waitress gave him.
no subject
He leaned on the table casually. He noticed the look the waitress gave his brother and... he wasn't going to lie that it bothered him on some level, just the reminder of how other people saw Dean... how he couldn't see his brother. He shrugged it off though and turned his attention back to Dean. "After all this is over, man, If you settle somewhere again, I'll have to come visit you... for a real visit, you know. You'll have to come visit me too. I don't know many vampire hang outs, but... we'll find something to do."
It'd be nice to have a real visit with Dean, maybe.
no subject
"Sure, Sammy. If you wanted me to visit you, I would."
no subject
He nodded a that, taking his beer when it was put on the table and taking a sip. "Yeah, of course I would, dude."
no subject
"You'd actually want to introduce your college friends to your vampire brother?" He asked curiously. For a long time, Dean had been pretty well convinced Sam was ashamed of him as a brother and that was before he was turned into a monster.
"Could make dating difficult."
no subject
He shrugged and laughed at that. "Well..." It could be a problem. It probably would be a problem, but- "I guess my brother's more important to me than dating, you know."
Besides, it was still so far into the future, all of this. That's how it felt anyway. "Besides, I doubt I'll be interested in dating for awhile, man."
no subject
"You will one day, though. You deserve to have the whole wife, house, kids package. All that normal stuff you wanted."
no subject
He didn't want to lose Dean permanently though, if he could help it. "You know... never thought I'd see the day where you'd encourage normal, dude. It's kinda... good to hear." He finished off his first beer and ordered another.
