An Unexpected Visit
They'd been at it over a month now with still no sign of Dad. There had been hope once when an old acquaintance of John and Dean's called for help on another case and informed them that he found Sam's phone number by calling John's. Suddenly the phone that had given them nothing but disconnect redirects was now clicking over to voicemail in their father's voice informing people to call Sam if they needed help.
Sam had... not liked that development. Dean could understand why. Sam didn't have anything against helping people, but to have proof that their father was still out there and knew Sam was hunting... presumably knew Sam was looking for him... but, he was still staying out of communication? Dean could understand why that was upsetting. All he could do was keep trying to track the man down and hope when they did, Sam could get his answers.
They were in the middle of nowhere Illinois, Dean still recovering from his first and last airplane flight, when their hunt met with an unexpected snag. Dean walked into their motel room after sitting with Sam through his dinner to find their room occupied. A blond vampire was stretched out on Dean's bed, lounging. Inwardly, Dean started cussing colorfully while he pushed Sam as casually behind him as he could.
"Hello, Eric."

And it was his luck that even though he wanted to kind of escape thinking about Dean and thought sleep would be the easiest way... that his dreams would feature the jerk.
Not in the ways he was used to either. Ways that left him aching and hard despite the twist of shame that settled in whenever he forced himself awake... even if he knew it wasn't exactly his fault for the dreams.
By the time Dean finally decided to show--and he hated that he'd actually been worried somewhere in all the other crap, he just let out a troubled little groan and rolled to his stomach, covers tugged tight around him.
At least Dean had come back, that eased any worry he'd had on the matter.
And maybe he could ask Dean what the hell was up with him tonight... well, if he could meet his eyes without getting embarrassed over stupid, ridiculous dreams.

They really did need to hit the road again after all.
And he did get a couple more hours of uneasy sleep before he was up and looking online for something up their alley and in the obituaries... anything he could think of.
By the time his brother's usual time to wake rolled around, Sam was dressed and poking at some Chinese take out he'd gotten, only half-interested. Hadn't been particularly hungry and he had other stuff on his mind.

There was no place for him anywhere. Back in Shreveport, he was a freak among monsters. Here with Sam, he was his brother's own, personal albatross. A weight to slow him down and make his life more dangerous. Beyond that... after a night of feeling Sam's lust and self-loathing over and over, he wasn't really sure Sam would even want to look at him.
Sadly, he couldn't hide under the bed all night. Eventually, he dragged himself out and did his best not to wince at the way his face and hands burned. His first honest to god sunburn since his turning. Eric would be so amused at his stupidity. Or maybe not. When he didn't want Dean dead, he was almost friendly.

At least kinky dreams about his brother were a strange vacation from that, no matter how embarrassing and wrong they were.
He looked up when Dean climbed out, looking him over. "You okay?" He was pretty red... damn, Dean had cut it too close getting back this morning.

He nodded slowly at Sam's question. "Just a little crispy. I'll be fine."
He noticed Sam was dressed and ready to go. Probably not time for a shower and eating, so he went for the latter. Fortunately, vampires didn't sweat, so hopefully his clothes from the night before weren't too nasty. And hey... he was already in his boots. He suppressed a sigh as he grabbed a bottle from the fridge to heat it up.
"Do we have a destination?"

He'd never been an entirely open book, especially now, so... now that he was forced to be? He was uncomfortable.
But it wasn't like he blamed Dean or even wanted him to feel bad over it, really.. He'd insisted on going along knowing the dangers, had been the one to get attacked and unable to save his own ass.
On the other hand, he also wasn't too pleased with Dean's attitude last night either. "Good."
He got to his feet at the question and nodded. "Yeah, Ohio. Found something that sounded like it might be up our alley in Toledo."

The night before, he'd wanted to chase after the waitress, but he thought it would make Sam uncomfortable, so he didn't. Somehow, when he tried to make his brother happy, he still ended up going wrong. He'd been tired, in pain, and frustrated, and lashed back more than he ought to have. All that anger was gone when he woke up this evening, though. Now, he was just empty and defeated.
He heated up the blood and resigned himself to bolting it down as he put his things together to leave. "Animal, vegetable, or mineral?"

"You want me to drive for a bit or are you up for it?"

He obediently read the obituary and nodded. It definitely sounded like the sort of thing they used to go for. He wasn't sure why Sam wanted to hunt instead of chasing down Dad like he had been, but there was no safe way to ask that either. Easiest thing would be to just do as he was told. At least that was something Dean was good at.
He tucked the paper under his arm and shouldered his bag, shaking his head. "I'm alright. Whenever you're ready."
no subject
"Alright, let's head out then." Seeing as Dean was ready, he grabbed his own bag and headed out to the car to put it in the car and then settled in the passenger seat.

Once his brother was settled in the car, he pulled out and headed toward the highway and north to Ohio.

"So, Dean--" He started eventually. "About last night, man... you know I didn't really mean I wanted you gone or whatever, right? I just- I thought you were wanting to go talk or whatever and I didn't want to hold you back..."
no subject
He glanced over when Sam started talking. Figured they'd get around to it sooner or later. He wasn't sure how to approach the conversation. All he wanted was to not fight again.
"I don't know why, but it seemed like you were riding me about it. I didn't like hearing you say crap like I shouldn't ditch you with no ride or whatever. I mean... is that really how you see me?"
no subject
"Not really... I mean, there were a few times when we were kids, you'd ditch me places for girls, but I know you wouldn't actually leave me with no way back." Not for long anyway. "I wasn't trying to pick a fight, Dean."
no subject
He nodded a little. "Sorry I barked at you."

He reached over to let his hand curl over the other's shoulder lightly. Felt kind of weird to be touching him right now, after last night's dreams and those lingering feelings, but... it was nice to not be arguing, to have Dean relaxed again. "I'm... glad you're here, Dean, and I'm glad you've got my back. Feels like you're the only one who does..."
Dad didn't seem to care enough to even give him a call. "But that's not exactly new."
no subject
"As long as I'm alive, or whatever I am now, I'll do whatever I can to help you. That won't change."

"Sometime before sunup, we should pull over somewhere and get me zipped up in the back." He hooked a thumb back toward the trunk. Not the world's greatest way to travel, but necessary sometimes. His 'vampire business' had already eaten up enough time. They should make some of it up.

"I should try and get some more sleep, if I'll be driving some of the way in, I guess." Hopefully his dreams stayed in the realm of innocent... and not pornographic or horrifying... which was actually the least appealing of all the options. It was actually kind of embarrassing to wake up screaming from a nightmare with Dean right there...
But on the plus side, sleep might ease up on any remaining tension anyway. He leaned back in his seat a little, tipping his head against the door.

He reached over to shake Sam's shoulder lightly and get him moving. "Rise and shine, sleeping beauty."
Around the back of the car, Dean opened the trunk and waited for Sam to join him. "If you're gonna do any daytime legwork, grab what you need now. I don't think opening the trunk while I'm in the body bag will hurt me, but people might wonder why it's in there. And don't get pulled over."
no subject
He nodded for Dean to get in and get situated so he could zip the other up. "Alright, see you tonight, Dean."
