Sam backed up when Eric took a step closer to him. The guy gave him the creeps... now that's what he figured a monster would act like and he honestly didn't want any part of it.
His eyes narrowed protectively when he grabbed Dean like that, instinctively wanting to help his brother, to get him away from any danger, but... he didn't get whatever 'politics' they were talking about exactly, didn't think it was wise to get Dean in any more trouble than he apparently already was in.
Dammit, he hated this. Hated being powerless and hated that they were apparently getting drawn into some vampire crap... or Dean was anyway, but it wasn't like Sam could up and leave Dean. He could, but he didn't want to.
